Embrace Iowa

Overview

Embrace Iowa is a joint project between ICAA, a 501c3 organization, and the Des Moines Register. The Des Moines Register takes a leadership role in sharing the real life stories of Iowans who are struggling to meet their most basic needs and educates the people of Iowa about the barriers and struggles the families are facing. Poverty is a complex issue, but through Embrace Iowa, the Des Moines Register helps explain the difficulties some families face in their efforts to improve their lives. With the knowledge Iowans have gained through Embrace Iowa, they respond with a generous spirit by financially supporting Embrace Iowa.

During the 2022-2023 campaign, Embrace Iowa raised $343,000, serving 645 families across Iowa.  Please note that any new donations for Embrace Iowa will now go toward the 2023-2024 campaign. Funds from the new campaign will be available to Iowans in December 2023.

The impact of Embrace Iowa is incalculable. For many Iowans these funds will assist removing a barrier preventing them from improving their life. A family may need a car repair to get back and forth to work and/or school or a bed for a good night’s sleep, making work or school a better experience.

Households applying must reside in Iowa and income must be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level to qualify for assistance. Eligible households can receive up to $750 towards the purchase of appliances, car repairs, dental service, medication, eyeglasses, furniture, home repairs, household items, beds, and other essential needs.

Applications for Embrace Iowa open around December 1st each year and close at the end of January and must be turned in to your local Community Action Agency.
